The PowerShot D10 is Canon’s first dive into the underwater digital camera market. Built around a 12.3 Megapixel sensor, 3x mega zoom and 2.5 inch LCD screen, the specifications are solid for a modern compact, though the D10 looks anything but that.
Designed for use in extreme environments, the D10 definally looks the part with amazing faux metallic finishes, perfectly rounded corners and lens housing. Canon claims it is water-resistant to depths of 10 meters or less.
There are two very obvious questions: how well does the D10 perform underwater, and can it replace any ordinary compact camera for everyday use? I did have the chance to borrow it from a buddy for reviewing matters. I can tell you with confidence, it sure is a great underwater camera. It can also be used just to take pictures in the nature or the city but that’s not what it excells at. For underwater matters, it almost flawless, I’d say.

It has a delicate design to it. It has a great lightning quality so you never have a bad picture under water due to loss of light. If you go deep enough, even the most clearest waters, 6-10 meters in, it gets dark very quickly. Having light there is a must for a good quality picture. 12.1 megapixel quality guarantees a good quality picture in every angle. The battery duration isn’t anything special, but I didn’t run out of energy either. For longer trips, you definally wan’t to have a portable charger or another battery/accu for immediate use.

Pentax Optio W60
The Pentax Optio W60 is a 10.0 Megapixel compact camera with a 5x optical zoom, 2.5 inch screen and a completely waterproof body which allows it to be fully deployed underwater without the need for any additional housing. Announced in May 2008, it is the successor to the Optio W35 and upgrades in every aspect, including coverage, lens resolution, screen detail and the great underwater specification.
The Optio W60 also has a superior underwater specification to its current rival, the Olympus SW undrwater camera series. Pentax claiming a maximum depth of 4m for up to two hours compared to 3m for one hour for the SW series. To be fair,  you are unlikely to notice any difference in practice. Few people will be underwater at very shallow depths for this long, and even then, battery life would definally be a bigger problem, especially if the water is cold.
